Sidney Poitier
The Academy Award-winning actor is among the most celebrated of famous people to come from Miami. He was born in Miami to Bahamian parents. While he spent most of his childhood in the Bahamas, he did move to Miami as a teen. He became the first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964. Poitier died at the age of 94 in January 2022.
Eva Mendes
Eva de la Caridad Méndez was born in Miami in 1974. She is a professional actress working under the name Eva Mendes. Her career has spanned several decades, and she has worked on many film and television projects. Some of her roles include parts in Training Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Hitch, and The Place Beyond the Pines.
Gloria Estefan
While born in Cuba, there few celebrities are more associated with Miami culture than Gloria Estefan. She also moved to Miami as a child and has lived in the city most of her life. Estefan first rose to fame as a member of the Miami Sound Machine in the 1980s and has been active as a performer ever since. She has won three Grammys, along with several other recording industry awards.
Alex Rodriguez
Many consider Alex Rodriguez one of the best baseball players to come out of the Miami area. He was born to Dominican parents in New York but moved to Miami at a young age. Rodriguez was drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1993. After the 2000 season, he signed what was, at the time, the largest contract in baseball history. With over 20 years as a professional, he is one of the most accomplished athletes in baseball history.
